What is Biblical Soul Care and Counseling?
Speaking truth in love, biblical soul care aims to help people know Jesus more, love Jesus more, and become more like Jesus.
Every one of us sees things through a particular perspective or lens. This informs how we see the world, what we know to be true about God, and the problems we face in our everyday lives. For the believer, it is necessary to pursue a deep understanding of the kind of counsel and care he or she seeks to receive. This is important because there are philosophies and theories that compete and/or contradict what we find in Scripture. Biblical Counseling is rooted in the authority, inerrancy, sufficiency of Scripture for every facet of life. It considers the ministry of God’s Word wholly sufficient for counsel and soul care.
In Scripture, we find that God’s law is completely good, true, and beautiful. God’s instruction is entirely trustworthy and faithful. God’s word directs us to the truth, grace, and gospel found in Jesus Christ. When we allow it to form us, radical transformation of the heart is possible. The goal of biblical counseling, then, is a radical transformation of the heart to the glory of God, not mere behavior modification. As we learn the will, truth, commands, and virtues of the Word, the Holy Spirit cultivates growth and sanctification in our hearts. This process, prayerfully, results in Christ-likeness and Christ-centered heart transformation.
Not only is my approach biblical in nature, but it is also clinically informed. Being human means that we are physically embodied and we have souls. As we live here on earth, we face the consequences of the world’s brokenness and sometimes it affects the body. The common grace of secular science and resources often brings practical awareness to counseling concerns. Some circumstances may require medical care and I will recommend that you contact your physician to attend to these needs. I do not diagnose clinical illness or prescribe medication. That said, if clinical care is needed, I will refer to an area specialist.
